KS1 Reading and phonics

The teaching of reading and phonics in Key Stage One (KS1) at Queen Boudica follows National Curriculum requirements.

We want children to enjoy and engage with reading in a rich learning environment. In order to develop their skills, we use a number of reading schemes. These include Oxford Reading Tree, Rigby Star and Collins Big Cat.

We recognise that high quality and systematic phonics teaching is essential to ensure children develop fluent word reading skills and can use this as the foundations for spelling. With this intention we have adopted the ‘Letters and Sounds’ programme. The aim is that children secure word recognition skills by the end of KS1. It is important that children understand the purpose of learning phonics and have lots of opportunities to apply their developing skills in interesting and engaging reading and writing activities
