Birch & Hazel Class News

This term , Year 2's topic is Penguins of Madagascar!

We started the unit off by watching the film in Literacy and talking about characters, setting and plot.  We will be writing our own sequel to the film - watch out DreamWorks! - as well as creating a factual report about an animal of our choice.  In Geography, we are comparing our own locality with that of locations used in the film as well as finding out more about Africa (and Madagascar in particular).  Our Art work links strongly to Africa too, with opportunities to create using clay, weaving and ICTPE will incorporate various travelling movements in order to create a dance themed around Madagascan animals and our outdoor session focuses on team games.  Our Science work this term is based on plants and animals.  In Maths we are counting in steps of 2, 3, 5 and 10 as well as consolidating our knowledge of place value (with numbers up to 100) and using this and known number facts to solve problems.  We will be moving on to practising our addition as well as learning about multiplication.

Just after half term, we will be visiting Colchester Zoo in order to research and observe animals in order to use this information to support our Literacy, Geography and Science work.
